Home Network Setup Blog

This smart home network setup uses the same network components as the two-story network setup and assumes a one-story house. It is important to ensure IoT devices have a strong connection to a wireless access point. You'll often need a switch to make a wired connection from the router to more distant places in your house before adding a wireless access point. This will ensure that the wireless access point will provide a reliable connection to important IoT devices, which are expected to work at all times.

Direct connection works only for a single pair of computers or devices. Additional devices cannot join such a network, although other pairs can be connected separately. The Wi-Fi portion of the network functions only to the limit of the wireless router's range. The range of Wi-Fi equipment varies depending on many factors, including the architecture of the home and potential sources of radio interference. Purchase a high-speed router for your Ethernet wired or wireless solution.

This arrangement can be useful if you’re running a Web server or an FTP site. The steps are pretty straightforward, but keep in mind that these are general rules of thumb. Various models and brands of access points and routers may differ on specific configuration details. Note that when I refer to “routers” in this section, most of this advice also applies to access points in Wi-Fi-only networks. That’s less total bandwidth than 802.11n, but HomePlug connections are for single clients.

So if the internet goes down there is no connection from your mobile to the smart switch unless the switch allows local access and that depends on the switch itself. Generally there is no configuration required as the default behaviour is only to allow connections from the local network to the Internet, and not from the Internet to the home network. When you connect to the Internet your device will use an external IP address.

Be sure you have enough Ethernet cables available for the job, as needed. You will require 1 Ethernet cable for each computer in your home network. These cables come in a variety of lengths, so know what lengths will work best for your network and buy accordingly. You have the option to set up two networks, one 2.4 GHz and one 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz is older technology with longer-range but the slower speed and is great for smartphones and tablets that don’t need as much. It doesn’t matter whether you’re setting up your home network in a multiple storey building or a large apartment or have a diversity of networking devices at your disposal. Unlike a network router, Ethernet hubs and switches cannot interface directly to an internet connection. Instead, one computer must be designated as controlling the internet connection, and all other computers access the internet through it.

Managed switches can have rules that limit traffic between different ethernet ports. Layer 3 switches also have VLAN ACLs that filter traffic between VLANs . These are basically limited firewall rules implemented in switches. They aren’t as flexible as software firewalls and only apply to OSI layers 3 and below, but they have the benefit of better performance compared to a firewall. Wireless Access Point – This is simply the wireless base station that will send and receive signals with your wireless client device (e.g. phone, tablet, laptop).

Putting a VPN directly on your router effectively extends that privacy to your whole network — protecting every device automatically, as well as any guests you grant Wi-Fi access. Private Internet Access, the VPN I personally use and recommend, has a step-by-step guide for this setup. For advanced networks and meshes, it is advisable to rely on different colors for sorting out the connections. This means you can use orange or black for every fiber connection, red for Powerline connections, and black for UTP connections, so on and so forth. This makes it easier to assign IP addresses to the gadgets and even identify the anomalies, if and when, they show up.

Designing Your Own Home Network

Newer construction often means better wiring, but how that wiring is laid out can also be a factor. In my home, we have discontinuous wiring–the only way to route a signal from the basement to the top-floor bedrooms is through the circuit-breaker panel. That’s often a bottleneck, and it can sometimes even completely block a HomePlug signal. Make sure you buy cabling from a reputable manufacturer, and take care to avoid the cheapest cables. Your router is the gateway for all your other devices’ internet traffic, opening you up to rogue DNS, rogue routes, or even TLS stripping man-in-the-middle attacks. Speaking of passwords, yours are all at least 15 characters right? Ransomware is also known to try default or common passwords and even attempt brute forcing. You might as well make sure that you have multi-factor authentication enabled where you can because malware can also steal passwords from your browser and email.

Internet Connection Sharing connects all the computers on your network to the Internet using either dial-up or a high-speed connection. Network switches also know about the default gateway machine and transmit all non-local traffic to it, enabling you to communicate with other servers. The traffic flowing over a network may involve the use of several different protocols, but ultimately each is transmitted as streams of TCP/IP packets. Each packet gives the source and destination IP addresses, a unique number that enables the destination to reconstruct the stream of data without error, and a whole lot more besides.

If you want to extend your network, but are unable to pull extra ethernet cables, then you could use your existing electrical wires. With Powerline Adapters you can extend your network through your electrical wires. If you are adding a switch to your network, also choose a modal that also has one or more PoE ports. Again, this setup can work if you have a small house or if you can place your router close to the room where you use wireless devices the most. A home network diagram is a schematic drawing of a home network layout.

Configure the Wireless Adapters

Instead of daisy chaining the Switches, you should connect them in parallel and pair one access point as well. If you are looking for network layouts that are in sync with extended homes and establishments, it is always advisable to consider a wide range of relaying resources. Plus, the IP address pertaining to the modem is persisted as you do not have a routing device at your disposal. The first page of the website should be a login similar to the first picture above.

Every Wi-Fi adapter requires you to choose between infrastructure mode and ad-hoc wireless (peer-to-peer) mode. In this mode, wireless adapters automatically detect and set their WLAN channel number to match the access point . All wireless adapters must use the same parameter settings for your WLAN to function properly. Wireless routers are a good choice when building your firsthome network. It's essential to choose the proper hardware when you're setting up.

Cool Things You Can Do with Your New Home Network

Security is a concern with Powerline — if you have an outside outlet, someone could plug into it and intercept data. That being said, if someone this sort of technical knowledge is creeping around your house at night, you may have bigger problems than data leakage. Don’t plug into an extension cord, surge protector, or power strip.
